Controlling the Hammond XK3 with iConnectivity mioXM

Here’s how to connect to the drawbars on a Hammond XK-3 using the drawbars in Logic Pro’s environment. You could use this same technique to gain MIDI control of the drawbars on any digital organ keyboard.

There’s a big catch here, and it is that many manufacturers drawbars use one MIDI channel to control all 9 drawbars and their 9 volume settings. This means 9×9=81 midi numbers (or starting from 0, its 0-80)

Logic’s environment is confusing, but it’s also Logic’s brain.

This is the first step in the process, where you’ll start to understand how the Logic environment connects everything in Logic to everything else and how Logic connects to everything outside of Logic.

First open the Environment in Logic by hitting Command+0, and go to the Clicks and Ports Layer.

Next open the manual for the organ and find the drawbar midi settings. Here is the XK-3s:

Next, go into the “New” dropdown menu and add a transformer. This is what we’ll use to remap a normal 0-127 value midi fader to a set of drawbars that use one midi channel for all 9.
